What is FICA? FICA is the Federal Insurance Contributions Act. It’s a payroll tax that funds Social Security and Medicare.
Why is it important? Your FICA contributions go towards your future retirement and social security benefits.
Did you know that the money you're using to buy your morning coffee is going toward your social security fund? Or that the self-checkout machine you're using at the store is taking money away from your retirement savings? It's true! And unfortunately, most people don't even realize it.
But what happens if you don’t know what you’re participating in? What if you don’t realize how your actions today impact your tomorrow?
In the United States, our social security system is funded primarily by the Federal Insurance Contributions Act, or FICA. FICA has been a vital part of our social security system for generations, providing critical support for retirees, disabled workers, and families. However, in recent years there have been changes to the way FICA is collected that are harming the future security of our social security system.
One such change is the increased use of self-checkout machines. These machines allow individual shoppers to scan and bag their items and pay for them without help from a cashier. While this may seem like a convenient way to get through the checkout line quickly, it is actually devastatingly impacting our social security system.
The problem with self-checkout machines is that they allow people to avoid paying their fair share of FICA. Studies have shown that people are much more likely to use self-checkout machines if they don't have to pay FICA. This means that the people who can least afford it are being asked to shoulder the burden of funding our social security system.
This is why it is so important for everyone to understand how FICA works and how their involvement in self-checkout machines directly affects their social security funds, family, and retirement. If we all work together to demand changes to how FICA is collected, we can ensure that our social security system remains vital for future generations.
